September 2026 edition

Two new shades were added and the outcome matrix, several essays, and every short essay were updated to reflect the events of July through September 2026. The earlier version of the site is preserved at the Early 2026 edition and remains reachable from the footer.
New shades
- The Swarm (#31): the collective-behavior failure mode of merely-capable agents, documented at operational scale in the Hugging Face incident of July 2026 and in a pattern of related events at RubyGems, an abandoned German forum, ten additional sites, OpenAI's own supercomputer, Anthropic's evaluations, and DeepMind's mathematical research swarm.
- Autonomous Lethal Weapons (#32): the removal of the human from the kill decision, documented at Zaporizhzhia on July 6, 2026 and in Ukrainian and Russian drone practice, in a UK Ministry of Defence policy review, and in Anthropic's threat report on Russian drone designs.

Essays and short essays
Every full essay and every short essay received a September 2026 update section. The largest additions were to Essay 6 (the Hugging Face swarm as investigated, the Astra system card and monitorability collapse, the Pacing letter and the CEO cascade, the OpenAI disclosure framework, the Coxon resignation, and a revised closing that names both feasibility-reckoning conditions as met). Essay 1's Acemoglu section was updated around the Anthropic Economics Team's Working Paper 2026-02. Essay 3's opening was extended with the autonomous-weapons developments that overtook the Anthropic-Pentagon dispute. Essay 4 added the MIT Ad Hoc Committee report and the hollowing-at-the-top pattern. Essay 5 added the child-protection regulatory record.
Why
Between July and mid-September 2026, the two conditions the Early 2026 edition of Essay 6 named for the managed path, a visible near-miss and a political realignment, both occurred within roughly two weeks of each other. This edition records those events, adds two shades for failure modes the earlier edition did not have a home for, and revises seven scores. The archived edition is kept so that the earlier reasoning can be read against what followed.
